Purebred Spanish Horse Regulations

1. Definition To the effects of the present provision, the Purebred Spanish Horse (PRE) is defined as the horse whose birth is registered in the Studbook of the Breed.

2. Division of the Studbook
The Studbook comprises the following registers:
  c) The Register of merits: for qualified and/or elite stallions in the main register, whose performance in competitions and contests demonstrate their outstanding conformation and functional qualities.

F) Defects: In addition to the general defects of the breed, the following are included:
  d) Disqualifying defects: horses with fallen crest (excessive accumulation of fat), ewe-necks, inverted necks, monorchids, cryptorchids, and a withers height below 1.50 m for mares and 1.52 for stallions (measurements taken with measuring stick)
4. Eligibility for breeding purposes:

 1. Horses registered in the Birth Register shall be entered in the Main Register prior to presentation of a certificate issued by authorized staff, which verifies their compliance with breed criteria and states that they are free from disqualifying defects.
 2. Horses in the Main Register shall be assessed upon the request of their owners by the commissions set up for this purpose.
 3. For their classification as "qualified horse for reproduction" or "elite horse for reproduction," Purebred Spanish Horses shall be assessed to determine their locomotive, genetic, and breeding abilities. This assessment will classify horses according to the following criteria:
a) "Qualified horses for reproduction": horses (broodmares and sire stallions) of three years or older which comply with the basic criteria for reproduction established in section 5 relating to breed criteria or conformation, functional testing, examination of the reproductive organs and veterinary control.
This qualification will appear in the passport or genealogical chart. b) "Elite horses for reproduction": mares and stallions registered in the Book of Qualified horses for reproduction (studs/broodmares) that have had a genetic examination during the course of selection procedures, to determine their functional and reproductive parameters and those of their descendants and siblings.

Likewise, those stallions and mares, which, in spite of not being registered in the Book of Qualified studs/broodmares, have had descendants whose sporting merits fall within the scheme for the improvement of the breed, will also be eligible for the status of elite studs/broodmares.
 5. Artificial reproduction methods are permitted for those animals included in the registers for both elite and/or qualified studs/broodmares, if there is compliance with the officially established terms.
 6. The General Studbook Commissions will set up yearly covering or insemination limits according to the category of each stud, and the number of descendants of the stud--which are recorded in the Birth Register--will not exceed the permitted yearly amount.

 5. Qualifying system The objective of this system is to assess the conformation and functional characteristics that horses must have in order to be eligible for inclusion in the Main Register as qualified or elite studs or broodmares.

5.1 Qualified Horses for Reproduction (studs or broodmares): although breeders will be able to present their horses at any age they deem appropriate, the animals must be at least three years old.
In accordance with breed criteria, qualification will be carried out by means of a scoring system. Thus, horses whose final assessment score is 70 points or more will be accepted as qualified studs/broodmares. The final score will be the average of sections A and B, with a 70 per cent and a 25 per cent weighting respectively. Horses will also have to pass the test in section C.
………………

Horses - of any age- that fail to attain the required score can be presented by their owners, for one further examination to try to obtain "qualified stud/broodmare" status in the two instances outlined below. The reason for their disqualification must be stated in their qualifying card:
1. Horses whose score results are between 60 and 70 points
2. Horses which demonstrate that they have overcome the reason for their disqualification

The status of qualified stud/broodmare can be withdrawn in the event that the horses or their descendants subsequently develop serious defects that lead to their disqualification.
The qualifying assessments will be carried out in specific locations and in facilities that comply with health and animal well-being regulations currently in force to ensure that all animals are assessed in standardized conditions. ………..

A. Conformation and behavioral characteristics: the parameters to be taken into account for both mares and stallions must meet the breed criteria outlined in section 3, and are as follows:
  • 1. Head
  • 2. Neck
  • 3. Back and withers
  • 4. Loin
  • 5. Chest and Thorax
  • 6. Croup and tail
  • 7. Front stance and limbs
  • 8. Hind stance and limbs
  • 9. Racial (Breed) fidelity and general appearance.
  • 10. Behavior, character and temperament
Animals will be disqualified if:
  • They score below five in any of the above-mentioned parameters.
  • They have defects, which necessarily lead to their disqualification.
  • They have other marked defects that can be transmitted to their descendants.
  • Their withers height is different from that required: 1.53 m for mares and 1.55 m for stallions.
B. Movement and functionality: During the assessment, horses will be guided by hand, with a rope and/or be left to move freely and perform three movements: walk, trot, and canter. Functionality characteristics of Spanish Purebreds will be rated from one to 10, paying special attention to suppleness, balance, coordination, regularity, harmony, cadence angle/shape of hind limbs, hand elevation, and length of stride.
Animals whose final score is below 5 points will be disqualified.
C. Veterinary control and reproduction characteristics: animals will be subjected to a veterinary examination in order to rule out serious transmissible defects affecting them in their limbs or as a whole. A radiological examination of the hock and joints of fetlocks and hooves will be performed in order to rule out osteochondrosis, osteoarthritis, and various exostoses.
Horses shall also pass an examination of their reproductive apparatus:

  • Stallions: a sperm test will be performed to determine the quality of the horse's zoo-technical characteristics and semen in accordance with its age, time of the year, sexual activity, etc.
  • They will also be subjected to a clinical examination of their reproductive apparatus to ensure that they have no faults or defects that may be transmissible or could negatively affect reproduction, as well as to verify that monorchid and cryptorchid conditions, groin or scrotal hernia, and other problems are non-existent.
  • Mares: must have foaled at least once or be in foal and pass the clinical examination of the reproductive apparatus consisting of an ultrasound exploration to verify the animal's health and rule out congenital or transmissible zoo-technical defects.
  • The tests must be performed by a qualified veterinarian who will provide owners with a certificate of the results. This certificate shall be submitted for the horse's conformation and functional assessment.
All health checks must comply with the regulations currently in force.
5.2 Elite Horses for Reproduction (studs/broodmares): horses which have been subjected to genetic assessment in accordance with the criteria laid down in the selection scheme approved for the breed and demonstrate to have transmitted their offspring the optimum quality established in section
4.3,b), shall be granted the elite studs/broodmares status.
